Ray is an ambient desktop data display that visualizes information through light. Its design is the result of research into the qualities of natural light. More specifically, it draws inspiration from the way sunlight can break through the clouds and project intense geometrical shapes of light through windows inside buildings. Ray projects a similar light shape onto the desk in order to create a peripheral, ambient display of information.
There is an abundance of data and information available in today’s world, but dealing and interpreting this data increase the cognitive load on people. By translating data and information to ambient light Ray moves some of this load to the periphery, changing and questioning the relationship we have with the increasing amount of information we have access to.
